Why the "7 Dog Years" Rule Is Wrong

The popular 7:1 rule is a rough average at best. Dogs age much faster in their first two years — a 1-year-old dog is closer to a 15-year-old human, and a 2-year-old dog is around 24 human years. After that, the rate slows to roughly 4–5 human years per dog year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it really 7 dog years to 1 human year?

No — this is an oversimplification. Dogs age rapidly in their first two years, then slow down. Our calculator uses a more scientifically accurate formula.

Does dog age vary by breed?

Yes. Large and giant breeds tend to age faster and have shorter lifespans than small breeds. Our calculator gives a general estimate based on average dog aging rates.
